Window Replacement – Part 1: Double Hung Windows
November 02, 2016It can take a lot of time trying to decide on the type of window that would look best on your home but many have discovered that checking out which options have the popular vote is a great way to narrow down choices. After all, this ensures that you’re looking at window styles that have worked well for others. However, different homes have different needs so your replacement of choice should be based on what will for you. If you’re looking for a timeless classic, then the double hung window is definitely for you.
Double hungs are characterized by two operable sashes, each sliding vertically to provide openings for ventilation. Perhaps the reason why double hung windows are so popular is because of its simple yet versatile design.
Advantages of Double Hung Windows
There are many advantages to double hung windows, but here are some of what are worth mentioning:
- Superb Ventilation Control. Sashes can be configured depending on your ventilation needs. Pop just the top sash open or have both sashes in the middle to create openings at the top and bottom, you decide!
- Ease of Maintenance. Double hungs have a straightforward design that doesn’t require a lot to maintain. Newer models today have even been designed to feature sashes that tilt in so you don’t have to step out of the house just to clean them.
- Aesthetic Appeal. While a classic like a double hung window works best in traditional homes, it will work just as well in more modern themes when appropriately used. And with a wide range of color, styles, and sizes available, homeowners can choose double hung windows that specifically complement their home design.
- Versatility. Aside from offering ventilation control, double hung windows are also versatile enough to address other needs, like the addition of an air conditioner (a unit can fit where the bottom sash is located) or child safety (open only the top sash and keep the bottom one locked to keep the little ones indoors).
What to Consider
Double hung windows are popular so it’s likely you’ll see them around your neighborhood. In fact, you might even already have them. If you find beauty in uniformity, then double hung windows will be great as replacements.
